Free public transport in Luxembourg
What will be changed?
From 1 March 2020, public transport will be free of charge on the territory of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Given the complexity of some networks and the current application of different fares, we have provided you with a summary of all the changes on 1 March 2020:
Free of charge on Luxembourg territory
All train (CFL), tram (Luxtram) and bus (AVL, TICE and RGTR) lines are free throughout the Grand Duchy. It is therefore no longer necessary to have a ticket, pass or season ticket. Please note: On trains, free travel applies only to second class. First class travel is still subject to a charge.
Regio Zone 1+2
The exemption from charges applies exclusively on Luxembourg territory. As soon as a public transport line crosses the national border, the journey becomes chargeable and the fare applied varies according to the distance to the Grand Duchy.
Pupils & students on the Regio Zone lines
Students under the age of 25 who attend a high school and have a "myCard" can travel free of charge on the Regio Zone lines L01-L07, 130 and 173 and use the other Regio Zone lines with the purchase of a "Studentepass".
Saarbrücken-Express
The Saarbrücken-Express will apply the "Regio Zone 2" fares from March 1, 2020.
- Short-term ticket 5 €.
- Long-term ticket 9 €.
